Clane Community Council 2016 Golf Classic

Friday September 9th 2016 at Millicent Golf Club

Sponsored by Larchfield Park Nursing Home

The annual Golf Classic, sponsored again by Larchfield Park Nursing Home, represents the main source of funding for Clane Community Council and the money raised supports the voluntary work that the Council does in the village. This again includes the need for extensive work on the Abbey, which is not just a Community Centre but the very symbol of Clane. The Council provides a forum for discussion on issues important to the locality and provides representation of the Community’s interests. It is also the co-ordinating organisation for many community projects, such as:

  • Tidy Towns
  • Community Games
  • The Abbey Community Centre
  • The Abbey Garden of Remembrance
  • Friary and Abbey Graveyard on the Sallins Road
  • Liffeyside Nature Park
  • The Stream Park in the village centre, now the playground
  • Clane Heritage Project
  • ClaneWatch

We hope that you will be able to support our Golf Classic at Millicent Golf Club, Clane on Friday September 9th with tee-times between 1.00pm and 4pm, although those who wish to play at other times will be accommodated.

  • Three person team, inclusive of a curry dinner, €150
  • Sponsorship of a hole is €65

The time sheet is in Marron’s Pharmacy. Your support is very much appreciated and will be acknowledged through Le Chéile, local newspapers, Clane notice-board and prominent signs at the golf course on the day.

Contact Des Marron (045-868112) or Des Drumm (086 2241761) for tee-times or other members of the Golf Classic Sub-committee: Nellie Dillon-Ford (045 892721), Tom Cleary (087 8273918) or Jack Kinsella (086 2630520).

      Clane Opens Its Doors!

With the Irish Open 2016 coming to the K Club, Clane is one of the localities selected by Kildare County Council to get involved in an event which will see some of the world’s finest golfers play here in Kildare, including Rory McIlroy and recent Masters winner Danny Willett. Clane has declared itself Open for the period of the Irish Open, May 19th to 22nd and is looking forward to welcoming visitors to this vibrant community with its fascinating history and buzzing array of shops, cafes, restaurants and bars.

The centrepiece of Clane Open is the Friday night, 20th May, which will feature a FREE concert in the Main Street. It will commence at 6.45 pm with Clondalkin Youth Marching Band marching from McKennas along the Main Street to the church and followed with a concert in the Church grounds at 7pm featuring singer/songwriter Mick Dunne, acclaimed fiddler Margaret Doherty and the Angela Brien school of Dancing as well as face-painting for children. There will be music in all the pubs that night too and shops will be open late- so do come along and enjoy the hospitality of this attractive and friendly village.

On Saturday 21st May there will be a Clane History Walk, also free of charge, meeting at Manzor’s Village Inn car park at 11am, with four guides taking different topics such as Clane’s role in 1798, the little known tale of Mathilda Tone, visiting Clane’s oldest man-made object and the “Garden of the Angels” to mention just a few stories in this hour long journey into the past. Craft beer is big news at the moment and Clane’s own Kelly’s Mountain Brew will be open between 12 noon and 3pm in Clane Business Park if you want to call by and learn all about brewing!

Other events to be held during the week include a shop window competition, children’s involvement through a golf-themed colouring competition, with prizes awarded at the concert, as well as a visit to the schools by a golfing pro “ambassador” from the Open. No less than two of Clane’s own Opens will be held in Millicent Golf Club, one for Seniors on Tuesday 17th May and a general one on Wednesday 18th May.  All this adds up to a lot of reasons to include a visit to Clane in your plans for Open week!

A special part of the Christmas light switch-on event in the Abbey on Sunday last was the presentation of the Claonadh Award. This is awarded by Clane Community Council to recognise an outstanding contribution to the community of Clane.

This year the Claonadh Award was presented to Evelyn McKee who was recognised for helping found and being the driving force behind the Little Way. This centre in Woods Way on the Kilcock Road provides tremendous assistance and support, free of charge, to people with cancer and their families.

Evelyn was presented with the Claonadh Award by Chairman of Clane Community Council, Des Drumm, and her name has been inscribed on the Community Awards Honour Board in the Main Hall of the Abbey Community Centre.

Evelyn McKee being presented with the Claonadh Award 2015 by Des Drumm, Chairman, Clane Community Council

On Sunday December 6th there was a great turn out for the switch-on of the Abbey Christmas Lights. Following some delicious punch and mince pies generously donated by Doolan’s – Londis, the people of Clane were treated to a beautiful selection of carols sung by Clane Parish Choir.

Des Drumm, Chairman of Clane Community Council then said a few words, and presented the Claonadh Award 2015 to this year’s recipient: Evelyn McKee, the driving force behind the Little Way.

Everyone then headed outside for the big countdown. Our Guest of Honour Evelyn lit up our wonderful new Christmas Tree – donated by Nellie Dillon-Forde – while the big countdown triggered the lights on the Abbey tower. Big thanks too to our “Chief Engineer” John Power for designing and donating a most impressive frame to raise and hold the tree.

                Christmas Light switch on 2015

Clane Community Council would like to thank everyone who contributed to the community of Clane in 2015. We hope the Abbey lights help brighten your evenings in the coming weeks. We wish you and yours a safe and happy Christmas.

                    Bob & Kate’s

A big thanks to all who helped out on the night, and in all the activities throughout the year. Clane Tidy Towns and Clane & Rathcoffey Community Games wish you a well-deserved relaxing few months, and look forward to your continued support in the years ahead.

                    Ideas for Clane

The volunteers on Clane Community Council are making plans for 2016, and would love to hear your views on how the village and community life might be improved.

A leaflet is being circulated around the village which can be filled in and dropped into the box in Doolan’s – Londis – on Main Street. Alternatively, fill out the form below to send in your ideas electronically.

Multiple forms can be submitted. Please submit your ideas on or before November 9th.

                    Thank you!
