Celebrating a wonderful year for the Community

Clane Community Council brought its year to a close with a wonderful celebration in the Abbey on Sunday evening last…

The party got off to a great start with delicious punch, mulled wine and mince pies generously provided by Marion and Dan from Doolan’s on Main Street. Clane Parish Choir then thrilled young and old alike with their beautiful rendition of a selection of Christmas Carols.

Chairman of Clane Community Council John Kennedy updated everyone on some recent developments within the council. He highlighted in particular the tremendous achievements of Clane in the Tidy Towns competition with the Bronze Medal – Clane’s first – revealed to all on stage, having been presented to our community by the Minister just a few days previously. Also on show were some examples of new Heritage Signage for the village recently commissioned by the Community Council. To be installed in the coming weeks, the signage was designed with the valuable assistance of Clane Local History Group, and made financially possible with Heritage funding from Kildare County Council, and generous donations from a number of anonymous donors.

The evening then continued with the presentation of The Claonadh Award 2014. Local resident Frida Lowry was presented with the award in recognition of her tremendous contributions to the community of Clane for over 28 years. Through her championship of groups like KARE, the Hang-Out Club and Clane Access Group she has helped deliver tremendous improvements to the quality of life of many in our community.

Everyone then braved the outside for the big switch-on of the Abbey Christmas Lights. A rousing countdown triggered the lighting up of the Christmas tree on the Village Green and the Abbey tower lights, and Clane Parish Choir brought the evening to a lovely close with a final selection of carols.

Clane Community Council would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed to their activities over the last 12 months, and indeed to everyone who contributes in any way to community in Clane.

We wish you and yours a safe and Happy Christmas and all the very best for the New Year.

    The Claonadh Award 2014

Clane has in its midst some amazing people and organisations who go above and beyond in their contributions of time and energy for the good of the community.

Throughout its history Clane Community Council has attempted to acknowledge such generosity by presenting Community Awards. Last year, in 2013, this format was reorganised a little with the launch of The Claonadh Award. The Claonadh Award is our community’s way of thanking an individual – or possibly a group – for making a particularly significant contribution to our community.

For her tireless efforts on behalf of those in our community with intellectual disabilities, for her championing of those living with physical challenges, and for helping to improve the quality of life for all of us in Clane, the Claonadh Award 2014 has been presented to Frida Lowry.

Over 28 years ago Maurice Shortt encouraged Frida, a new resident of Clane, to spend some time with KARE, a group that promotes inclusion for people with Intellectual Disabilities. Frida became so dedicated to this cause that she rose to board level of the organisation, and has continued to this day to tackle the needs of some of the more vulnerable in our community, through KARE, and through other complementary initiatives.

Back in 1992 Frida founded The Hang Out Club – a social club for teenagers with an intellectual disability in the greater Clane area. With the help of people like Teresa Killick and many volunteers, it now provides a wonderful social outlet for over 25 teenage members and a similar number of helpers.

With the establishment of Clane Access Group, Frida has also created a voice for those of us with physical challenges. Consulting closely with experts in the field, with local property owners and with Kildare County Council, Clane Access Group has helped make Clane a significantly more accessible village than it used to be. This has genuinely transformed the quality of life for many in our community. It has made it possible for more people in our community to enjoy access to the basic facilities that many of us take for granted.

John Kennedy, Chairman of Clane Community Council, was honoured to present The Claonadh Award to Frida at the Christmas celebration held in the Abbey Community Centre on Sunday December 7th last.

Clane Community Council receives generous donation from Intel

Clane Community Council is delighted to have received $2810  – over €2100 – from Intel Ireland this year as part of their Intel Involved community outreach programme.

Clane Community Council Intel Involved 2014

Martine Grogan, Rita Mahon, Tony McEvoy and John Kennedy, all members of Clane Community Council, delighted to receive the donation from Intel

Intel distributes an amount based on the number of hours its employees volunteer with each approved charity. 2013 was a particularly busy year for the Community Council and with several Intel employees contributing substantial personal time the grant received reflected this.

John Kennedy, Chairman of Clane Community Council and himself an Intel employee, thanked Intel for their generous support of the Community Council.  The money will be used to support the numerous initiatives it continues to run on behalf of the community including Clane Tidy Towns, Clane and Rathcoffey Community Games, Clane Frairy and Abbey Graveyard, and Lé Cheile.

If you or people you know happen to work in Intel – please get in touch if you’d like to find out more about the scheme.

Announcing the Annual Golf Classic – Friday August 15th

            Clane Community Council

            2014 Golf Classic

Friday August 15th 2014 at Millicent Golf Club, Clane

Sponsored by Larchfield Park Nursing Home

The Clane Community Council Golf Classic is now an eagerly awaited annual event, made possible in recent years by the generous support of Nellie Dillon-Ford on behalf of Larchfield Park Nursing Home, celebrating 25 years of excellence in nursing care for the elderly. The Golf Classic represents the main source of funding for the voluntary Community Council and the money raised supports the voluntary work that the Council does in the village, including the need this year, again, for extensive work on the fabric of the Abbey, the symbol of Clane. The Council, besides providing a forum for discussion of local issues and representation of the Community’s interests, is an umbrella organisation for many projects, including:

            • Tidy Towns
            • Community Games
            • The Abbey Community Centre
            • The Abbey Garden of Remembrance
            • Friary and Abbey Graveyard on the Sallins Road
            • Liffeyside Nature Park
            • The Stream Park in the village centre, now the playground
            • Clane Heritage Project

We hope that you will be able to support our Golf Classic at Millicent Golf Club, Clane on Friday August 15th with tee-times between 1.30pm and 4pm, although those who wish to play at other times will be accommodated.

            • Three person team, including a curry dinner, is €160
            • Sponsorship of a hole is also available for €75

The time sheet is in Marron’s Pharmacy. Your support is very much appreciated and will be acknowledged through Le Chéile, local newspapers and prominent signs at the golf course on the day.

            Contact Des Marron ( 045-868112 ) or Des Drumm ( 086 2241761) for tee-times or other members of the Golf Classic Sub-committee: Nellie Dillon-Ford (045 892721), Tom Cleary (087 8273918) or Jack Kinsella (086 2630520).

Best-Kept Estate Competition – now open for entries!

Clane Tidy Towns Logo - 2013Clane Tidy Towns are delighted to again hold our popular Best Kept Estates competition thanks to the continued generous sponsorship by Clane Project Centre.

This year there are some changes to the competition format. Rather than score an estate under various categories based on one visit, this year the judges will be asked to consider each estate from a broader point of view, and to make any comments they deem appropriate rather than give scores based on just one visit. They will take into account any initiatives since the last competition that they are made aware of in the entry form.

More information on the competition is available here and all housing estates are encouraged to enter. Paper forms have been distributed but estates can alternatively fill out the online entry form here.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact anyone on the Tidy Towns team or email ClaneTidyTowns@gmail.com.

Our residential areas have helped Clane make great progress in the National Tidy Towns competitions in recent years. We look forward to seeing you at our awards night later in the year to help celebrate everyone’s contributions this year. Thank you for you continued support.

            Community Games – Congratulations!

Congratulations to all the winners of the recent Clane and Rathcoffey Community Games track and field and swimming events. They were recently presented with their medals in an awards ceremony in the Abbey Community Centre.

              The Loose Tooth Tree

Damian Murphy, a native of St. Brigid’s Terrace, has sent us in a copy of one of his poems from his collection The Spice of Life: A Collection of Rhyming Verse. Do you remember the Loose Tooth Tree???

              The Loose Tooth Tree

              Memories of times long past
              Memories that seem to last
One thing I remember, it was special to me
Is the hideout known as The Loose Tooth Tree.

It was in a hedge where many trees did grow
It looked nothing special if you didn’t know
But for me and my pals it was something just ours
where we could escape for hours and hours.

It was completely covered with dark green ivy
Though the roots were loose, making it quite shaky
But once inside you were impossible to see
Ideal for a hideout we named the Loose Tooth Tree.

Though you could see out cross the fields everywhere
If you were quiet no one knew you were there.
Keeping it secret was just half the fun
An oath of secrecy was sworn by everyone.

Bits and bobs from everywhere made it our own
A great place to be, with the gang or alone
Jokes and stories were told, there was great laughter
And yes we discussed girls, and the ones we were after.

We had blackjacks, fruitsalads and bullseyes too
Time bars and curly wurlys that took ages to chew
A place to relax where there was no sense of hurry
We were so young sure we didn’t have a worry

We used it for cowboys and indians, hide and seek
The rare risqué mag there did we peek
Indeed it is where I tried my first smoke
When my pals were convinced I was going to choke.

We ambushed the boys from Clongowes when they came to town
Yes us boys from the Terrace gained some renown
It was all good clean fun, just fisticuffs back then
And didn’t it help us all on our journey from boys to men

We were Smiths and Nevins, Murphys and Callans
Dorans and Behans, Delaneys and Ryans
All from St Brigids and so proud of the fact
“No outsiders allowed” was a part of the pact

We had bags of crisps that cost only two pence
Wore platform shoes so high they didn’t make sense
Flared collars so wide we were in danger of flight
We had hair so long it often interfered with sight.

We listened to the Osmonds, the Monkees and Status Quo
We loved Abba and Gary Glitter (how were we to know)
We loved the Waltons, Top Cat and the Flintstones, yabadabadoo
Little House on the Prairie, Shirley Temple, and the Little Rascals too

Yes The Loose Tooth Tree belonged to St. Brigid’s Terrace
But as more houses went up other kids proved a menace
Two bits of wood and a nail, we all had a sword to fight
and peg guns proved effective if the aim was right.

We decided to make up a language all of our own
What we were saying others had no way of knowing
Not parents nor priests, not teachers or anyone
And we had such mighty craic, it was so much fun.

It was an innocent time, we were all boys growing
Our lives were changing without us really knowing
In the Loose Tooth Tree we were all good friends together
Making memories that would stay with each of us forever

It was during the seventies in my home town of Clane
Upon leaving ‘twas two decades ‘til I saw it again
To my dismay the Loose Tooth Tree was no more
But it will live on in my memory for evermore.
