Former Clongowes teacher and local historian Brendan Cullen will give the talk on both the Pale and the early history of the castle as well as snippets of its later history and links to James Joyce.

The walk and talk starts at 3pm from the car park on the right hand side at the end of the Clongowes driveway.

Introducing Clane’s New Heritage Signage

Heritage SignageDuring 2014 the Heritage subcommittee of Clane Community Council and Clane Local History Group worked together to design and deliver a new set of Heritage signage for the village of Clane.

First of all some key sites were selected from the rich list already featured in the Heritage section of this website. The key features of each location were then condensed into a sentence or two that could be squeezed into a plaque.

With heritage funding from Kildare County Council and a number of generous donations from the locality, the signage was then commissioned, manufactured and delivered.

In recent weeks Kildare County Council have started to install the new arrivals. Already two finger posts, a number of plaques, and the Information Board on Main Street are in place.

In the coming weeks and months you can expect to see the remaining plaques and posts go up.

We hope you enjoy this new amenity for the village!

Launching “Coiseanna” … Volume 2

On Wednesday 17th April 2013, the 2nd volume of “Coiseanna”, published by Clane Local History Group, was launched by Mr. Des Marron, Mayor of Clane, in a crowded GAA Centre. This year’s volume runs to 124 pages and is chock-a-block with local historical information of great interest to all  residents of Clane.

Clane Local History Group would like to thank the huge crowd who attended the launch; the GAA authorities for the use of their premises and the shopkeepers in Clane who are kind enough to sell the journal for us.

“Coiseanna” (named after Coiseanna Hill on College Road) costs only 5 Euro per copy and can be purchased at the following outlets in the Village: The Parish Shop; Marron’s Chemist; Hughes’ Chemist; Given’s Optician; Country Blossoms; Clancy’s Chemist.

The journal makes an ideal present for those Clane people who have had to emigrate in recent years.

We hope you enjoy the read.
